August 01, 2008Outreach CoordinatorsOutreach Coordinators Building California Construction Careers (BC3) is a program of the State Building and Construction Trades Council that brings career opportunities in construction to high school students and transitioning adults. We promote apprenticeship as an excellent alternative for students who might not be inclined to go to college and who don’t want to go into the military and as a high-wage opportunity for those without jobs or working in low-wage jobs. BC3 outreach coordinators spend about 70% of their time at high schools, making presentations at school assemblies, career fairs, and classrooms, and about 30% of their time making presentations at community organizations, conferences, prisons and probation programs. This three-year old program is currently funded through December 2008, but we are always on the lookout for continued funding. Qualifications and Work Expectations Because this program has only short-term funding guaranteed, we need to hire creative people who are outgoing, goal-oriented, quick learners and self-starters. Organizing experience or good “salesmanship” is key, as this is essentially a marketing position—we need to sell teachers, counselors and organization leaders on bringing us in, and we need to make dynamic presentations geared to different audiences and varying lengths of time. People with the above traits, who have past experience working in construction, will be considered most favorably. (We will provide training about the BC3 program, resources, and making effective presentations.) In addition to making the presentations, each coordinator is also responsible for submitting a brief report about each activity completed. Note: in the past, this was a staff position where out Outreach Directors made their own contacts and set up their own calendar. Because of the short duration left in the program, we will attempt to set presentation dates from our Sacramento office, and will pay consultants for the days they make presentations. This plan may be renegotiated. Duration: Starting ASAP and running through December 30 Hours: Most of the presentations will take place Monday-Friday, with an occasional Saturday career fair or evening meeting. Please send resume and cover letter to: For more information, call Debra at 510-832-6450.
