The Position
The Port of Oakland is currently recruiting for the position of Plumber. Under general supervision, the plumber performs a variety of journey-level work which includes installing, servicing, maintaining and repairing plumbing, heating, irrigation, ventilation and sewer systems within prescribed craft standards. The incumbent must have thorough job knowledge and be able to solve most technical problems. Contacts are normally limited to other Port employees. Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

Installs, maintains and repairs a variety of plumbing fixtures and heating and ventilating equipment, such as valves, control devices, pumps, water heaters, gas burning appliance, toilets, water irrigation, sewer, air, steam and sprinkler lines; inspects and repairs heating and cooling systems and components.

Services irrigation sprinkler system components; uses proper chlorination procedures, clears stoppages; repairs breaks and leaks.

Installs and maintains underground sewer and water lines, sprinkler lines, and underground fire mains; operates small trenching machines.

Cuts and threads pipe; installs and repairs transite, iron, copper, lead, and plastic pipe; does incidental soldering and brazing work; tests completed work.

Reads blueprints; plans installations; prepares estimates for anticipated plumbing and heating installations.

Instructs employees in lower classifications when assigned as helpers.

Completes forms; makes routine written reports related to assignments.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Minimum Requirements for Application
This examination is open to persons who have a combination of education and experience that would reflect possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A typical combination would include the following:

Education: Graduation from high school and completion of an accredited apprenticeship program.

Experience: Four years of job experience may be substituted for the apprenticeship program.

Licenses: Incumbents in this job are expected to operate automotive vehicles in the performance of assigned duties. Due to assignments and hours worked, public transportation may not be an efficient method for traveling to required locations. Individuals appointed will be required to maintain a valid California Driver’s License while employed or demonstrate the ability to travel to required locations in a timely manner.

Additional Requirements: This Airport specific classification requires each incumbent to complete and pass a Transportation Security Administration/Federal Aviation Administration (TSA/FAA) 10-year employment history verification, which will include fingerprinting and a Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) prior to being considered for this position. [In addition, the incumbent in this position will be required to complete and pass a U.S. Customs Airport Security Program Check (19CFR122.182).] This status must be maintained for the duration of employment at the Airport.

Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Knowledge of water, gas, air conditioning and heating installation, maintenance and repair methods, tools, and materials; building codes related to plumbing and air conditioning apparatus.

Ability to install and maintain plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems and locate, analyze and repair deficiencies as necessary; read, interpret and work with blueprints; prepare rough sketches of work and make estimates of materials and labor.

The Selection Process
Stage 1: Application Evaluation (Pass/Fail) - All properly completed application materials will be reviewed to determine if applicant meets the minimum qualification requirements. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee advancement to the next stage. Only the most suitably qualified candidates will be invited to Stage II.

Stage II: Assessment Examination (Pass/Fail) - The second stage of the selection process will consist of a combination of a written examination and job-related situational project exercises designed to assess technical knowledge.

Stage III: The third stage of the selection process will consist of an oral panel interview designed to assess technical knowledge and any additional other knowledge, skills and abilities.

The Port of Oakland reserves the right to modify the selection process as necessary to conform to administrative or business necessity.

Physical Plant – Campus Services has a position for an Elevator Mechanic to engage in projects requiring the highly specialized skills of the elevator craft. Repair and maintain elevators, dumbwaiters, conveyors, and moving stages. Install, replace, maintain and repair electrical motors, wiring controls, alarms, lighting, mechanical and hydraulic mechanisms and devices typical of elevators and other type lifts. Work from drawings, prints, manuals, and verbal instructions. Select materials and devices. Perform complex electrical and hydraulic mechanical troubleshooting. Wire panels, switches, control boards, electronic circuit boards, motors, pumps and other mechanisms. Troubleshoot complex computer control devices and software control operating programs. Requirements: Completion of a formal elevator mechanic or electrical apprenticeship program or demonstrated high level elevator mechanic experience. Min 3 years as a journeyman mechanic. Certificate of certification from the Elevator Industry. Excellent communications skills, ability to read prints and work independently a must. Ability to lift 75 lbs., climb ladders, stairs and scaffolding. Must be able to respond to emergencies at all hours and work on call.
Valid CA driver’s license. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.

Automotive Maintenance Worker I – performs a variety of duties in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of automobiles, light to heavy trucks, and similar vehicles in a central shop, at a remote job site, and/or from a lubrication service truck in the field.

Carpentry Worker I – performs a variety of sub-journey level general carpentry work in the repair, maintenance and alteration of wooden, steel, concrete, and related structures.

Electrical Worker I – performs a variety of sub-journey level maintenance, repair, and installation duties on electrical circuits, motors, controls, and equipment.

Heavy Equipment Maintenance Worker I – performs a variety of duties in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of various large trucks, heavy construction, and related field equipment in a central shop, at a remote job site, and/or from a lubrication service truck in the field.

Plant Maintenance Worker I – performs a variety of mechanical maintenance and repair work on wastewater plant equipment; inspects and performs field preventive maintenance work on water treatment and distribution plant equipment.

Wastewater Plant Operator Trainee – performs a variety of routine cleaning, maintenance, and operational duties involved in the continuous operation of a large metropolitan wastewater treatment plant.

People selected for these classifications will enter into a 48-month trades training program. During this program, people are expected to learn knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to work in a specific trade. The training will include coursework, as well as on-the-job training. Satisfactory completion of the coursework and on-the-job training is mandatory. If at any time while in the program, a person does not perform adequately (fails coursework or cannot demonstrate proficiency of a required task), his/her employment will be terminated. If a person is successful in the program, he/she will be promoted to journey status.

DUTIES: To administer Equipment Rental Contracts (ERC) and other field operations procurements for the District=s five watersheds (three Divisions) to maximize efficiency and minimize cost. This position is responsible for all aspects of the scheduling, acquiring and assigning of equipment and materials needed for field crews in the watershed operations; coordinating the preparation of procurement bid documents and purchase requests; monitoring performance of vendors and contractors with respect to related purchase orders, agreements and contracts; and coordinating the reuse and/or disposal of sediment generated from field operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: Three years of responsible field construction, maintenance, or raw water distribution and groundwater recharge experience including one year of performing administrative responsibilities or providing lead direction on an ongoing or project basis and Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level course work in engineering or a related field.
