March 11, 2005Plumber, journey-level, Port of Oaklandcloses 3/21/05 Open Recruitment Closing Date Salary/Work Week Civil Service Status The Position Installs, maintains and repairs a variety of plumbing fixtures and heating and ventilating equipment, such as valves, control devices, pumps, water heaters, gas burning appliance, toilets, water irrigation, sewer, air, steam and sprinkler lines; inspects and repairs heating and cooling systems and components. Services irrigation sprinkler system components; uses proper chlorination procedures, clears stoppages; repairs breaks and leaks. Installs and maintains underground sewer and water lines, sprinkler lines, and underground fire mains; operates small trenching machines. Cuts and threads pipe; installs and repairs transite, iron, copper, lead, and plastic pipe; does incidental soldering and brazing work; tests completed work. Reads blueprints; plans installations; prepares estimates for anticipated plumbing and heating installations. Instructs employees in lower classifications when assigned as helpers. Completes forms; makes routine written reports related to assignments. Performs other related work as assigned. Minimum Requirements for Application Education: Graduation from high school and completion of an accredited apprenticeship program. Experience: Four years of job experience may be substituted for the apprenticeship program. Licenses: Incumbents in this job are expected to operate automotive vehicles in the performance of assigned duties. Due to assignments and hours worked, public transportation may not be an efficient method for traveling to required locations. Individuals appointed will be required to maintain a valid California Driver’s License while employed or demonstrate the ability to travel to required locations in a timely manner. Additional Requirements: This Airport specific classification requires each incumbent to complete and pass a Transportation Security Administration/Federal Aviation Administration (TSA/FAA) 10-year employment history verification, which will include fingerprinting and a Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) prior to being considered for this position. [In addition, the incumbent in this position will be required to complete and pass a U.S. Customs Airport Security Program Check (19CFR122.182).] This status must be maintained for the duration of employment at the Airport. Qualifications Ability to install and maintain plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems and locate, analyze and repair deficiencies as necessary; read, interpret and work with blueprints; prepare rough sketches of work and make estimates of materials and labor. The Selection Process Stage II: Assessment Examination (Pass/Fail) - The second stage of the selection process will consist of a combination of a written examination and job-related situational project exercises designed to assess technical knowledge. Stage III: The third stage of the selection process will consist of an oral panel interview designed to assess technical knowledge and any additional other knowledge, skills and abilities. During this program, people are expected to learn knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to work in a specific trade. The training will include coursework, as well as on-the-job training. Satisfactory completion of the coursework and on-the-job training is mandatory. If at any time while in the program, a person does not perform adequately (fails coursework or cannot demonstrate proficiency of a required task), his/her employment will be terminated. If a person is successful in the program, he/she will be promoted to journey status.
