Unless you are a currently carded journeyperson within this craft, or can provide proof of time credit to be carded as a journeyperson, you will start at the entry level apprentice rate consistent with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
Journeyman Carman rate: $23.04/hour. Employees receive annual benefit packages averaging $22,000.
Duties:
Inspect, build, and repair freight cars for compliance with AAR, FRA, and Company standards. Inspects car frames and car bodies for holes, cracks, and other defects.
Inspects all safety appliances including hand holds, sill steps, grab iron, brake platforms, running boards, etc. Inspects wheels to insure that rims treads, plate, hub axle, and bearing are in good repair.
Maintain, replace and/or repair air brake pipes, valves, gaskets, air hoses and other equipment as required. Inspects outlet gates on hopper cars and air dumps for defects and ensures they are properly secured.
Operates electrical and gas welding equipment to join a variety of metals and alloys; operates acetylene torches for cutting and/or shaping metal parts such as aluminum, cast iron, steel, bronze, etc.
Operates specialized off-highway motor vehicles including forklift trucks, mobile cranes, trackmobiles, and ship tractors.
Qualifications: Welding skills, both SMAW & TIG, gas torch cutting skills, metal fabrication, installation, and trim skills, finish carpentry and cabinetmaking woodworking skills, carpet, tile, and wall covering skills preferred.
Must work well within high performing teams. Commercial Driver's Class B License is preferred. Knowledge of AAR and FRA rules is preferred
