The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Department of Public Works are announcing a recruitment for the position of Fire Heavy Equipment Mechanic. There is one full-time vacancy.

Within the Garage Division of the Department of Public Works, this position is responsible for overhauling and repairing gasoline and diesel powered fire engines, fire pumps, piping and foam systems, emergency medical and rescue equipment and automobiles and light trucks. Emergency repairs and maintenance may need to take place on the fire line at any time.

The ideal candidate has personal and professional integrity, is highly organized, possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills, approaches their work with enthusiasm, and demonstrates a strong commitment to customer service. The ideal candidate has vast experience maintaining and repairing Type 1 and Type 3 fire engines, ambulances, emergency response vehicles and heavy construction equipment and is knowledgeable of multi-plexing electrical systems and vehicle HVAC systems using modern technology to diagnose problems. In addition, the ideal candidate uses sound independent judgment and is capable of working independently for extended periods of time in remote locations, outdoors in any weather conditions, and can work evenings, nights and weekends. The ideal candidate possesses one or more California State Fire Mechanic Certifications (Level I, II, and III).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Three years of experience as a journey-level mechanic which demonstrates the knowledge and ability requirements listed in the class specification. Possession of a California State Fire Mechanic Certification (Levels I, II, and III) is highly desirable.

LICENSE: This job class requires travel between various County and business-related locations, including off-road and remote sites. Employees who drive on County business to carry out job-related duties must possess a valid California driverís license for the class of vehicle driven and meet automobile insurability requirements of the County, including review of a recent DMV history. If a driverís license is required, at the time of the selection interview by the appointing authority, applicants will have to furnish a recent DMV driving record.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Incumbents' work is primarily performed in an equipment shop with moderate noise and exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals and substances. Emergency repairs on a fire line is required. Must be able to lift heavy objects (such as heavy equipment tires) for installation or repairs.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Incumbents must provide a full set of mechanicís hand tools upon appointment to position.

Within the Communications Division of the Department of Public Works, this position is responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing electronic communications equipment for public vehicles. This position assists division technicians in the construction, assembly, installation, repair, service and testing of the more complicated communications systems and equipment.

The ideal candidate has personal and professional integrity, is highly organized, possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills, approaches their work with enthusiasm, and demonstrates a strong commitment to customer service. The candidate has an electronics background and knowledge of basic electronic theory, including Ohms Law, AC/DC theory, audio and radio frequency circuits, electronic measurements, semiconductor fundamentals, and mathematics for electronic technology. The ideal candidate uses sound independent judgment within established procedural guidelines, and is knowledgeable regarding the safe operation of hand and power tools used in facility and equipment maintenance and repair. In addition, the candidate is capable of climbing 60-foot towers, working independently for extended periods of time in remote locations, outdoors in any weather conditions, and can work non-standard schedules including evenings, nights and weekends.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associateís degree in Electronics or a related field or one year of full-time experience in the installation and repair of communications equipment that provides the necessary knowledge and ability requirements listed in the class specification. A Federal Communications Commission radio telephone operatorís license is highly desirable.

LICENSE: The duties for this position may require travel to various locations within the County to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on County business, maintenance of a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record is required. Candidates will need to furnish a recent (within six months) DMV driving record at the selection interview.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Incumbents may be required to climb 60 foot towers for some assignments. Incumbents must have the ability to work night shifts, weekends, irregular hours and holidays.

The Bridge to Gas Operations for Women program previously announced for this September has been put on hold until February 2015.

Tradeswomen Inc. still is accepting applications from women interested in being considered for tentative February 2015 program. We are looking for women who meet the following qualifications:

DUTIES

A Housing Inspector inspects residential rental property locations for conformance to housing habitability, quality, and property maintenance ordinances; and investigates code violation complaints and follows through with the code enforcement process by way of litigation or administrative abatement.

REQUIREMENTS

1. One year of full-time paid experience as an Assistant Inspector IV with the City of Los Angeles; or
2. Two years of full-time paid experience in carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing or heating following satisfactory completion of a recognized apprenticeship program; or
3. Eight years of full-time paid carpentry, masonry, heating, electrical or plumbing craft experience; or
4. Four years of full-time paid experience as a building construction superintendent, general contractor, or supervisor of journey-level craft employees engaged in construction work; or
5. Two years of full-time paid experience as a housing, building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical or combined inspector for a governmental agency; or
6. Completion of a certificate in Construction Inspection or Construction Technology, or possession of at least an Associate of Arts Degree from a recognized college or university with at least 12 semester or 18 quarter units in any of the following areas: engineering, construction, design, building inspection technology, construction inspection, architectural drafting, civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering technology; and two years of full-time paid experience working in the construction trades as a helper to a journey-level craft person.

NOTES:

1. A valid California driverís license is required. Candidates will be disqualified and not eligible for hire if within the past 36 months they were convicted of a major moving violation, such as driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, and may be disqualified if there are three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents within the past 36 months.
2. Upon appointment, a Housing Inspector will be required to furnish a properly insured automobile for use in City Service. Mileage will be paid according to established rates.

SELECTION PROCESS

The examination will consist entirely of a written test, composed of multiple-choice questions, in which candidates may be tested for knowledge of: the Los Angeles Municipal Code as it applies to existing buildings, including the Housing Code and portions of the Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical Codes as they apply to existing residential occupancies; the elements of the Los Angeles City Fire Code relevant to multi-family dwellings and fire and life safety issues related to existing residential occupancies; the elements of the California Health and Safety Code related to existing residential occupancies; job-related safety principles and practices; and the ability to: apply pertinent provisions of the codes, ordinances, and accepted standards; prepare clear and concise written documentation of inspection activities; the ability to use personal computers and office terminals; deal tactfully and effectively with the public, renters, property owners, and others; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Candidates will be notified by mail of the time and location of the written test which will be held in a single half-day session on SATURDAY, AUGUST 23, 2014, in Los Angeles.

5. You must have received a regular appointment to a City position or be on a reserve list to file on a promotional basis.
6. In conjunction with Civil Services Rules, applicants who have received a regular appointment to a City position or are on a reserve list will be considered Promotional candidates while all other applicants will be considered Open candidates.

Notice:
