emergeCalifornia: Women Leaders for a Democratic Future

EmergeCalifornia is a political leadership training program for Democratic women in the San Francisco-Bay area. Our mission is to identify, educate and inspire women who want to pursue, elective office at the local and state level in California.
Emerge makes a long term investment in these future leaders by honing their political skills, expanding their knowledge of local issues, and connecting them with mentors.

The Class of 2010 application is now online. Do you know a woman who make a great elected official and political leader - is she you? Go to our website at emergeCa.org for more info.

APPLICATION PROCESS FOR 2009-2010

The application for the Class of 2010 is due September 21, 2009. Please note that the application changes slightly each year.

Selection Criteria
Emerge California seeks bright, self-motivated women who are committed to effective political leadership, are committed to run for elective office and who have:

* evidence of political leadership experience or potential, and meaningful involvement in workplace or community
* interest in running for political office
* demonstrated ability to bring together disparate groups to achieve a goal
* ability and desire to build effective networks
* ability to articulate a personal political vision
* demonstrated ability to inspire others
* commitment to full participation and attendance requirements of the trainings

Applicants must be Democratic women who reside in either of these counties: San Francisco, Marin, Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, Napa, Sacramento or San Mateo.
Emerge California will select 20 to 25 women from the Bay area who meet the above criteria and who we believe have the potential to be political leaders.
Emerge California embraces diversity and encourages applications from all women regardless of age, race, color, national or ethnic origin, marital status, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, or physical abilities.

WITH HAMMER IN HAND, The Story of Women in Construction

...Join us in a celebration of working women...
in a 60 minute television documentary

October 4, 2009, 2 PM in Berkeley
RSVP: ruthmag@earthlink.net

Meet extraordinary women who work as ironworkers, carpenters, piledrivers, among other trades-and greet their friends and supporters. PBS documentary producer, Maria Brooks, will show a trailer of her current project, "With Hammer in Hand, the Story of Women in Construction" and answer questions.

Forty years after equal employment legislation, only 2% of jobs in construction are held by women. Why have so few women entered these well paying trades? Talk to women who do the work and view a documentary, 'work in progress'. We are raising funds for Maria's important film.
Contribute what you can and bring your friends. Share an afternoon of good conversation and refreshments-and meet some bold and spirited women.

October 4th, 2009, 2:00PM
1401 Walnut St. #1C, Berkeley (near Rose Street)

RSVP: ruthmag@earthlink.net
(510) 548-9904

Emmy nominated producer, Maria Brooks, has written and directed several documentaries appearing on PBS including "The Men Who Sailed the Liberty Ships" and "Shipping Out, the Story of America's Seafaring Women".
