About Lois Jenson

Lois Jenson, portrayed by actress Charlize Theron, filed and brought
forward Jenson v. Eveleth Mines, the first successful harassment class
action lawsuit of its kind in U.S. history. This case forever changed
the American workplace for women.

She and other women first entered the traditionally all-male world of
mining when giant steel corporations agreed to hire women to offset
past hiring discrimination of minorities and thus comply with Civil
Rights legislation. The women went to work in the iron mines of
Minnesota to get better paying jobs, but they did not realize they
were entering a hostile workplace. Ms. Jenson, a single mother, and
the other women were met with verbal insults, physical and verbal
threats, degrading graffiti, groping and other physical assaults that
worsened after she complained to management. She went to court and
filed a lawsuit.

This case is a landmark decision citing the legal responsibilities of
employers to not only provide equal employement opportunities for
women, but to ensure that their work environments are free of
harassment. Those changes were made as a result of Ms. Jenson's long,
twisted legal journey that allowed women to stand together as a class.
As knowledge of the case grew, many companies put policies and
training into place in order to avoid liability and embarassment, as
well as to protect their employees even before Jenson v. Eveleth Mines
was successfully resolved.

Dear Tradeswomen

Are you looking for a great opportunity to reach out to young women who may be interested in looking at a career in construction?

Do you have a flexible job where you can take time off work to participate in outreach opportunities? (many public sector positions allow for this type of outreach) I

f are be unable to do an outreach event during the week, would you be available evenings or weekends?

Tradeswomen, Inc. is invited to join the North Coast Builders Exchange in presenting The "Careers in Construction" Expo to be held Wednesday May 14,2008.

Over 1,000 high school and middle school students were exposed to our industry at the 2007 Expo, and with our industry associations' support and participation that achievement will happen again.

Here are the details:
* The location is the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building

* At least 1,000 students from Sonoma, Lake, and Mendocino Counties are expected to attend

* Event hours are from 8:30 am until 1:00 pm on Wednesday May 14th

* Setup hours are from 2:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Tuesday May 13th and from 8:00 am until 8:30 am the day of the event

The efforts of Tradeswomen, Inc. have been terrific in the goal to promote the recruitment of young women into our industry.

We appreciate the time and energy that you've contributed to this outreach.

I hope that you'll consider our Careers in Construction Expo to be a valuable event.

Please contact me by email at bonnie@tradeswomen.org or call me direct at (510) 891-8773 ext. 315 to confirm your participation.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Rebuilding Together Projects

Tradeswomen Needed for Rebuilding Together Projects

We at San Francisco Rebuilding Together are excited about the possibility of having more tradeswomen work with us to make a direct and tangible difference for low-income San Franciscans and community facilities.

You have the ability to make the type of difference that our 2,000 unskilled volunteers cannot because of your knowledge of electrical, plumbing, dry walling, etc. It is fulfilling work!

A couple of things to keep in mind: We have projects all across San Francisco.

Volunteers will have to work with other companies or unskilled volunteers.

For the most part, the work can be done anytime in April (and in some cases in May or later).

Those who want to get involved should contact: Ms. Orlanda Wilson

Lois Jenson, portrayed by actress Charlize Theron, filed and brought forward the first successful class action lawsuit in the United States on sexual harassment and changed the American workplace for women.

She went to court and filed a lawsuit After many years of trials and legal maneuvers, the appeals judge ruled that "sex stereotypes reflected in and reinforced by such behaviors (i. e. photos, graffiti, language, etc.) were part and parcel of the working environment".
